How to Use Your Pet Oxygen Kit

Follow these simple steps to provide life-saving oxygen to your pet
Critical: If you have a high-risk pet with health conditions
Without this oxygen kit, your pet may not have the chance to access care. Keep it accessible and know how to use it.
1

Assess Your Pet

Check for signs of respiratory distress: rapid breathing, blue gums, or difficulty breathing. Act quickly if you notice these symptoms.
2

Prepare the Kit

Open your oxygen kit, connect the mask to your oxygen tubing. Next ,connect the tubing to the regulator, and turn-to-connect the regulator to your first canister.
3

Administer Oxygen

Now that oxygen is flowing, gently place the mask on your pet's face - measuring respiratory rate while you administer or transport. Monitor the regulator's gauge to see your level of oxygen.
4

Seek Veterinary Care

Pet owners typically administer 3-5 minutes or until an episode of respiratory distress dissipates. If the episode is not dissipating, seek emergency veterinary care, stabilizing with Oxygen on the way.

Frequently asked questions

Everything pet parents and veterinarians ask before buying our best-selling Rescue Oxygen Kit — from emergency use and shipping to canister duration, safety, and how to give your dog oxygen at home.

No. The Dog Rescue Oxygen Kit ships over the counter without a prescription. Replacement canisters, masks, regulators, and tubing are also available without an RX. Only our medical-grade oxygen concentrators require a prescription, because they're intended for ongoing therapy rather than emergency rescue use.

Give your dog oxygen at the first sign of respiratory distress: rapid or labored breathing, excessive panting, coughing fits, blue or purple gums or tongue, collapse, "belly breathing," or loud honking sounds. Oxygen stabilizes your dog while you head to emergency veterinary care. The kit is a bridge to professional treatment, not a substitute for it. Always contact your vet during or after any episode requiring oxygen.

Setup takes under 60 seconds:

  1. Open the kit and connect the mask to the oxygen tubing
  2. Connect the other end of the tubing to the regulator
  3. Twist the regulator onto a canister to start oxygen flow
  4. Hold the mask 6 inches from your dog's face, then slowly place it over their nose
  5. Administer oxygen for 3–5 minutes or until the episode subsides
  6. Twist the regulator counter-clockwise to stop flow and save remaining oxygen

If the episode doesn't de-escalate, continue administering and transport your dog to emergency veterinary care. The kit ships with printed instructions, and our customer support team is available Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm EST.

Each 15L canister lasts between 5 and 30 minutes depending on the regulator flow rate, which is pre-set to your dog's weight:

  • 0.5 LPM (dogs 0–11 lbs): 30 minutes per canister
  • 1.0 LPM (dogs 11–22 lbs): 15 minutes per canister
  • 2.0 LPM (dogs 22–33 lbs): 7.5 minutes per canister
  • 3.0 LPM (dogs 33+ lbs): 5 minutes per canister

You can start and stop oxygen flow as many times as you need — canisters don't have to be used in one sitting. Consider adding additional canisters if you have a larger animal.

Choose by your dog's current weight. If your dog is on the cusp between two ranges, always size up:

  • 0–11 lbs: 3 canisters, medium mask, 0.5 LPM regulator (90 min total)
  • 11–22 lbs: 6 canisters, medium mask, 1.0 LPM regulator (90 min total)
  • 22–33 lbs: 6 canisters, large mask, 2.0 LPM regulator (45 min total)
  • 33+ lbs: 6 canisters, large mask, 3.0 LPM regulator (30 min total)

You can add extra canisters at checkout if you need longer transport runtime.

Yes, it's working. We engineered the kit system to be deliberately quiet because dogs in respiratory distress won't tolerate a loud rush of air on their face. To verify oxygen is flowing, place one end of the oxygen tubing into a glass of water — you'll see bubbles when oxygen is being delivered.

Pet parents most commonly use the Dog Rescue Oxygen Kit for:

  • Collapsed or collapsing trachea episodes
  • Congestive heart failure flare-ups
  • Respiratory distress.
  • Asthma
  • Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed breathing distress — pugs, French bulldogs, English bulldogs, Boston terriers, Cavalier King Charles spaniels
  • Laryngeal paralysis
  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Post-surgical recovery
  • Smoke inhalation from house fires
  • Heat stress and overexertion
  • Senior dog respiratory episodes
  • Seizure recovery

Yes. Pawprint Oxygen Canisters are small enough to hold in your hand and operate at less than 1/10 the pressure of a large medical E-tank. They're rated safe by the Department of Transportation for UPS Ground shipping and remain stable in temperatures up to 120°F, so they're safe in cars and warm storage. Oxygen itself is not flammable but is an accelerant — keep canisters away from open flames, and never puncture a canister, just like any aerosol can.

Pawprint Oxygen Canisters carry a 2-year shelf-life guarantee on the seal. Canisters often remain usable beyond that date — the guarantee covers the pressure seal rather than the oxygen itself. You can verify a canister is still full by checking the gauge on your regulator. If you're unsure whether a canister is expired, call us at 1-855-699-4366 with the lot number printed on the bottom of the canister.

No. Pawprint Oxygen Canisters cannot be refilled. Once empty, recycle them in your standard aluminum recycling bin. You can reorder replacement 15L canisters anytime from our website.
