The oxygen is so quiet! How do I know it's working?

This is extremely purposeful! We found that pets won't accept the oxygen if it's loud on their face. You can always check the oxygen flow by simply placing one end of the oxygen tubing into a glass of water.

My French bulldog had been dealing with aspiration pneumonia. In our last episode, his O2 levels fell very low, and he had to spend two days in an oxygen chamber at the ER. Do I need a prescription to buy a cat oxygen kit?

No. The Cat Rescue Oxygen Kit ships over the counter without a prescription. Replacement canisters, masks, regulators, and tubing are also available without an RX. Only our medical-grade oxygen concentrators require a prescription, because they're intended for ongoing therapy rather than emergency rescue use.

When should I give my cat oxygen?

Give your cat oxygen at the first sign of respiratory distress: open-mouth breathing (a serious warning sign in cats), rapid or labored breathing, "belly breathing," wheezing, blue or purple gums or tongue, collapse, or coughing fits. Oxygen stabilizes your cat while you head to emergency veterinary care. The kit is a bridge to professional treatment, not a substitute for it. Always contact your vet during or after any episode requiring oxygen.

How do I use the cat oxygen kit in an emergency?

Setup takes under 60 seconds: 1. Open the kit and connect the mask to the oxygen tubing 2. Connect the tubing to the regulator 3. Twist the regulator onto a canister to start oxygen flow 4. Hold the mask 6 inches from your cat's face, then slowly place it over their nose 5. Administer oxygen for 3–5 minutes or until the episode subsides 6. Twist the regulator counter-clockwise to stop flow and save remaining oxygen If the episode doesn't resolve, transport your cat to emergency veterinary care while continuing oxygen on the way.

How long does each oxygen canister last?

For cats, each 15L canister lasts between 15 and 30 minutes depending on the regulator flow rate, which is pre-set to your cat's weight: 0.5 LPM (cats 0–11 lbs): 30 minutes per canister 1.0 LPM (cats 11+ lbs): 15 minutes per canister You can start and stop oxygen flow as many times as you need — canisters don't have to be used in one sitting.

How do I help my cat get used to the oxygen mask?

Practice during calm moments before an emergency. Hold the mask 6 inches from your cat's face first so they can acclimate to the oxygen flow before the mask touches their nose. Add a treat or churu paste to the inside of the mask and let your cat approach it on their own — most cats accept the mask quickly once they associate it with something positive. During an actual respiratory episode, cats typically don't resist the mask because they feel immediate relief from the oxygen flow. The PureVent mask is also designed to be quiet so it doesn't startle pets during use.
