Frequently asked questions
Below are the questions we hear most from pet parents and veterinarians. For anything else, give us a call or chat with a Pawprint representative.
HemoSEAL is made from chitosan, a natural clotting agent derived from shellfish. When sprayed on a bleeding wound, the chitosan binds to red blood cells and forms a physical barrier that seals the wound — typically within 30 seconds to 2 minutes. It's the same active ingredient first responders and military medics use in human emergency care, adapted into an easy-to-use aerosol spray for pets.
No. HemoSEAL is available over the counter and ships directly from our website — no vet prescription required.
No. HemoSEAL is sting-free, non-toxic, and gentle. The formula is designed to reduce stress and pain during treatment, which makes a real difference when your pet is already scared from an injury.
HemoSEAL is designed for bleeding wounds, including:
- Nail clipping injuries (cutting the quick)
- Cuts, scrapes, and lacerations
- Puncture wounds and bite wounds
- Paw pad injuries
- Ear injuries from scratching
- Trauma wounds from accidents or falls
- Bleeding tumors or abscesses
The only wounds it shouldn't be used on are those in the mouth or in/around the eyes.
Most bleeding stops within 30 seconds to 2 minutes after application, depending on the severity of the wound. For deeper wounds, pair the spray with light manual pressure to speed clotting.
1. Calm and secure your pet (a second pair of hands helps).
2. If possible, gently rinse the wound with clean water or saline.
3. Shake the canister, hold at least 12 inches from the wound, and spray.
4. Apply light pressure with clean gauze if bleeding is heavy.
5. Get to your vet — HemoSEAL stabilizes the wound, but deep or serious injuries still need professional care.
Your vet will safely remove the HemoSEAL barrier at the hospital.
HemoSEAL should not be left on for longer than 24 hours. For most injuries, you'll be at the vet well before that — but if you're managing a minor wound at home, plan to have it removed and the wound reassessed within a day.
HemoSEAL is a stabilizer, not a substitute for veterinary care. Go straight to the vet (and skip or limit at-home treatment) if your pet:
- Has heavy, pulsing, or arterial bleeding that doesn't slow with pressure
- Shows signs of shock (pale gums, rapid breathing, weakness, collapse)
- Has a deep wound, exposed tissue, or anything requiring stitches
- Was hit by a car or sustained major trauma
- Has a wound on the face, mouth, or eyes
When in doubt, apply HemoSEAL on the way and call your vet en route.
HemoSEAL is FDA-cleared and adapted from BC3 Technologies' SEAL Hemostatic Spray, the same chitosan-based technology trusted by first responders and military medics in human emergency care. It's manufactured in the U.S. and available exclusively through Pawprint Oxygen.
